6 Days Umbwe Route

Day 0: Arrival in Moshi

  • Arrive in Moshi, Tanzania, a vibrant town located near Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Meet with Mr Andrew or Our representative for a briefing and equipment check.
  • Spend the day resting, exploring Moshi, and preparing for your trek.
  • Overnight stay in a hotel or lodge in Moshi.

Day 1: Moshi to Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

  • After breakfast, drive to the Umbwe Gate (1,800 meters/5,905 feet) for registration.
  • Begin the trek through the lush rainforest.
  • Hike for approximately 5 to 6 hours to reach Umbwe Camp (2,850 meters/9,350 feet).
  • Set up camp, have dinner, and rest for the night.

Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

  • Wake up early and have breakfast.
  • Trek steeply through the Umbwe Ridge, which offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.
  • Continue hiking through the moorland to reach Barranco Camp (3,960 meters/12,995 feet).
  • Today’s trek takes about 6 to 7 hours.
  • Set up camp, enjoy dinner, and rest.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Start the day with breakfast.
  • Hike up the Barranco Wall, a challenging but exhilarating ascent.
  • Trek across valleys and ridges, passing the scenic Karanga Valley.
  • Arrive at Karanga Camp (4,035 meters/13,238 feet) after about 4 to 5 hours of trekking.
  • Set up camp, have dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
  • Breakfast at the camp
  • Continue the trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m)
  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours
  • Terrain: Alpine desert
  • Rest and prepare for summit night
  • Early dinner and rest at Barafu Camp
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
  • Wake up around midnight for a quick snack and to prepare for the summit attempt.
  • Start the steep ascent to Stella Point, where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise.
  • Continue trekking to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa!
  • Take photos, celebrate, and enjoy the incredible views before descending.
  • Descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and breakfast.
  • Continue descending to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
  • Descend through lush rainforest
  • Arrive at Mweka Gate (1,640 meters)
  • Sign out with park authorities
  • Receive summit certificates
  • Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha
  • Trekking duration: 3-4 hours
  • End of the trek
