6 Days Marangu Route

Day 0: Arrival in Moshi

  • Arrive in Moshi, Tanzania, a vibrant town located near Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Meet with Mr Andrew or Our representative for a briefing and equipment check.
  • Spend the day resting, exploring Moshi, and preparing for your trek.
  • Overnight stay in a hotel or lodge in Moshi.

Day 1: Moshi to Mandara Hut (2,700m/8,858ft)

  • After breakfast, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, where you’ll complete registration formalities.
  • Begin your trek through the rainforest, following a well-maintained trail.
  • Reach Mandara Hut, your accommodation for the night, by late afternoon.
  • Spend the rest of the day relaxing, enjoying the surroundings, and acclimatizing to the altitude.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,204ft)

  • Wake up early for breakfast before continuing your ascent.
  • Leave the rainforest behind as you trek through the moorland zone, with its unique vegetation and scenic views.
  • Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, situated on a vast plateau with stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.
  • Spend the remainder of the day resting, hydrating, and adjusting to the increasing altitude.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

  • Breakfast at Horombo Hut.
  • Acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks (3,980 meters / 13,054 feet) or Mawenzi Hut.
  • Return to Horombo Hut for lunch.
  • Rest and relaxation for further acclimatization.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at Horombo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m/15,420ft)

  • Depart Horombo Hut after breakfast, trekking steadily upwards through the alpine desert.
  • Pass by the “Last Water Point” and traverse the rugged terrain towards Kibo Hut, your final base camp before the summit.
  • Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon, where you’ll have a pre-summit briefing and prepare your gear for the summit push.
  • Rest and try to get some sleep before the midnight ascent.
  • Dinner and a short rest at Kibo Hut.

Day 5: Summit Day - Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) and descent to Horombo Hut

  • Wake up around midnight for a light meal and final preparations before beginning the ascent to the summit.
  • Start the challenging trek in darkness, guided by your headlamp and the stars above.
  • Reach Gilman’s Point (5,681m/18,638ft) at the rim of the crater just before dawn, where you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise over the East African plains.
  • Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, arriving around sunrise.
  • Spend some time celebrating your achievement and taking photos before beginning the descent.
  • Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
  • Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll have your final night on the mountain.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and return to Moshi
  • Enjoy breakfast with stunning views of the mountain before beginning the final descent.
  • Trek through the moorland and rainforest zones, retracing your steps back to the Marangu Gate.
  • Complete your trek by signing out at the gate and receiving your summit certificates.
  • Transfer back to Moshi, where you can enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and celebratory dinner.
  • Overnight stay in a hotel or lodge in Moshi.
