Climbing Lemosho Route

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is typically completed in 7 to 8 days. This is a great option if you want a longer trek for acclimatization. It connects with the Machame Route depending on the number of the days on the way to Lava tower.

  • Wildlife can be seen at the start of the trek in the forest zone
  • The route joins the Machame trail at Shira 2 thus sharing some of the features of that route
  • Coupled with the Barafu option to the summit, this route is the longest summit-bound trail on the mountain

Arrival Day: Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport you will be met by our representative and get transferred to Moshi in a designated hotel for overnight.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,050 m/6,725ft) to Big Tree Camp (2,800 m/9,186ft) - Distance: 7 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Rain Forest

We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, and then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2,800 m/9,186ft) to Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m/11,499ft), Distance: 9 km, Hiking, Time 5-6 hours, Habitat: Heather

We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m/11,499ft) to Shira 2 Camp (3820 m/ 12,532ft), Distance:  4 km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Moorland

We explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,820 m/ 12,532ft) to Barranco (3,940 m/13,000ft), Distance: 11 km, Hiking Time: 5-6 hours, Habitat: Semi Desert

From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,940m/13,000ft) to Karanga Camp (3930m/12900ft)

This is an extra important day which gives you more time to rest before the summit. You hike from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp which is almost four hours and you will reach at the camp in midday and get more time to rest.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (3930m/12900ft) to Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft)
Elevation Gain: 600 meters, 2,140 feet

Leave Karanga Camp after breakfast to begin the very short hike to Barafu Camp which is almost three hours. On the way to Barafu, view several of Kibo's glaciers as well as the junction that connects the descent route, Mweka, with the Machame trail.

During day four, hike by the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. Although the way to Barafu is bleak, alpine desert with little vegetation, Barafu Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, and Rebmann Glacier. Try to sleep as soon as you finish dinner as you will be waking up at midnight for your summit hike.

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) to Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft), Elevation Gain: 1,295 meters, 4,240 feet, Elevation Loss: 2,795 meters, 9,170 feet

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. For the next six hours, hike by the light of your headlamp. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point.

The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers.

At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another two to four hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft) to Mweka Gate (1,500m/4,920ft)

Elevation Loss: 1,600 meters, 5,250 feet

After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Mweka Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing through Kilimanjaro's cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Our vehicles will be waiting at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to Moshi. You will be able to buy t-shirts and sodas at the gate.
